Joseph L. Cox, 51, of Strasburg passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, in the Community Hospice Truman House following a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Born on August 2, 1972, in Dover, he was a son of Gloria (Robert) Kail Coffee of New Philadelphia and the late James L. Cox Jr.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Barbra Roberts and mother-in-law, Debbie Shearer.

Joseph attended New Philadelphia High School, where he graduated in 1991. Following his graduation, he embarked on a successful career at AT&T. For the past 22 years, Joseph served as a phone technician with a remarkable level of skill and expertise until illness forced him into retirement.

Football played a significant role in Joseph’s life; he was an ardent Cleveland Browns fan and took great delight in watching every game. In addition to football, Joseph also loved traveling and immersing himself in new experiences. Cancun, Mexico, held a special place in his heart as one of his favorite destinations, as well as the Grand Canyon.

In addition to his mother, Jospeh is also survived by his wife, Shannon Shearer Cox, whom he married on October 27, 2001; their two sons, Mathew and Brandon Cox of the home; brother, James (Amanda) Cox; sister, Lisa Orr; sister-in-law, Stephanie (Keith) DeVault of Dover; and his father-in-law Chuck Shearer of Strasburg, and numerous extended family members and friends who were touched by his kindness and generosity.

Cremation has been entrusted to the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home and Crematory at Strasburg.  A service celebrating Joseph’s life will be held on Monday, December 11th starting at 5:00 pm in the Strasburg Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Rissler officiating.  The family will be greeting friends at the funeral home on Monday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm.
