Julia B. (Yoder) Gerber, 83, of Sugarcreek passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2024, at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital following a short period of declining health.
Born in Crystal Springs, Kansas on July 28, 1941, she was the daughter of the late David J. and Mayme (Boyts) Yoder. She married Dr. Robert Gerber on June 9, 1963, and earned a Master of Science degree in Nursing from The Ohio State University.
Julia worked at University Hospital in Columbus before serving much of her career in her husband’s medical practice before retiring in 1999. She was actively involved in her community, especially with her church, Sugarcreek First Mennonite Church, where she served in many capacities over the years. She was involved with the early years of hospice care in the area, assisted with the Children’s tent at the Kidron Mennonite Relief Sale, volunteered with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program, and the Ragersville school. With her husband, she experienced traveling throughout the United States and other countries, many times for mission work. She greatly enjoyed gardening, playing cards and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Robert Gerber; son’s Chris Gerber of Stone Creek, and Jon Gerber of Sugarcreek; sister Judy (Benji) Roth of Iowa; brothers Dean (Sharon) Yoder of Illinois, Lynn (Judy) Yoder of Colorado, Tim (Fran) Yoder of Kansas, Vic (Debbie) Yoder of Oklahoma; brother-in-law Don Gerber and sister-in-law Joanne Gerber both of the Kidron area; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister and brother-in-law Phyllis (Willard) Widmer of Iowa, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Harold (Margaret) Gerber; and sister-in-law Pam Gerber all of the Kidron area.
Per Julia’s wishes, cremation will take place, and a public memorial service will be announced at a later date. Smith-Varns Funeral Home in Sugarcreek is assisting the family with arrangements.
