Katherine R. Athey, age 97, of New Philadelphia, passed away Friday, March 17, 2023, in the Inn at Northwood Village, Dover.

Born December 12, 1925, in Blairs Mills, Pennsylvania, she was a daughter of the late Clarence and Bessie Goshorn Mutersbaugh. Katherine moved at a young age with her family to Tuscarawas County where she grew up and attended school. She was a loving homemaker and was employed by Alsco Anaconda in Sugarcreek for 21 years, retiring in 1980. Katherine married John “Jack” Athey on January 17, 1981, and the couple lived in Lorain and Vermillion before moving back to Tuscarawas County. She and Jack attended New Philadelphia’s Trinity Gospel Church. Some of Katherine’s favorite pastimes were reading – especially the Bible and periodicals, and crocheting.

She is survived by her three daughters-in-law, Jackie and Marcia Labus and Jan Hunker, all of New Philadelphia; her nine grandchildren: her many great-grandchildren; her brother, Bobby (Betty) Mutersbaugh of Uhrichsville; and her numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by husband, Jack, on August 18, 2011; her three sons, Ralph and Fred Labus and John Hunker; her four sisters; her seven brothers; as well as her half-sisters and half-brothers.

Family and friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Tuesday, March 21, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m.; a service will follow at 1:30, officiated by Crossroads Hospice Chaplain David Oliver Kling. Burial will be in Dover’s Ridgecrest Memory Gardens.
