A local softball team was recognized by the Ohio Senate for their 2023 championship win.
The Strasburg-Franklin High School Lady Tigers took home a victory at the OHSAA Division IV Softball State Championship against Hopewell-Loudon.
On Wednesday, the team and Coach Tom Spidell were on the floor at the 135th General Assembly. 31st District Senator Al Landis noted that with the win, the Tigers defended their title.
“In doing so, Strasburg won their 9th state softball championship and are now tied with two other schools for the most state softball crowns in Ohio High School Athletic history.”
The coach’s sister, Tammie Spidell, pitched and won the first state championship for the school district in 1987.
“Since then, they’ve won in 1988, 1989, 1991, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2022, and 2023.”
Amelia Spidell, at the time a junior, was the star pitcher for Strasburg with a record setting 18 strikeouts.
For the next season, Landis pointed out that, with four starters returning, the Lady Tigers have a goal of achieving their 10th state title.
