Boating season is ending sooner than expected at Atwood Lake because of the extreme drought conditions.

The Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District is telling owners to keep an eye on lake levels and start making plans to remove their boats for the season.

Director Craig Butler says owners should remove their boats before the lake levels reach 926 feet.  They’re currently at 926.2 feet, according to information from the army corps of engineers in the water levels and quality link at www.mwcd.org.

He says the situation is something they haven’t delt with in decades as water levels are down about a foot and a half below normal.

Butler says the recommendation is mainly for owners of sailboats since they have a larger draft than pontoon boats.
