
A 1957 graduate of Newcomerstown High School, Larry was drafted into and went on to serve honorably in the US Army as a trumpet player with the Fort Knox and Fort Eustis Army Bands. Larry met Edy while they were both serving in the US Army, and after marrying on December 6, 1963, and completing their military service obligations, they took up residence in Newcomerstown.
Larry retired from Columbia Gas of Ohio after 28-years of service in 1994. Larry was an avid bass fisherman, woodworker, bowling and golf enthusiast, and the former director of music and member-deacon of the Valley View Baptist Church. Larry is remembered for his tremendous love and talent for singing and his colorful and unforgettable storytelling.
Larry was preceded in death by his dear wife of 58 years, Edy. Larry is survived by his children, Beth (Scott) Ballentine of Uhrichsville, Ohio, and Rob (April Sandifer) Groff of Satellite Beach, Florida; six grandchildren, Jarhett Groff (April), Miles Ballentine, Leighanna Lucas, Ashley Ballentine, Jadyn Groff, and Kyrah Groff; five great-grandchildren, Asher Groff, Arlo Lucas, Beckham Lucas, Scarlett Groff, and Evelyn Groff; his brother, Charles Groff; sisters, Marjorie Groff and Audrey (Hanni) Groff; his nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
A graveside service celebrating Larry’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 16th, 2022 at the Pleasant View Church Cemetery, 7556 Church Road SW, Newcomerstown, Ohio.
