Lester C. Bates, 86, of Strasburg, passed away in Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center at Canton on October 27, 2023.
Born in Strasburg on March 12, 1937, he was the son of the late Walter Bates and Clara (Hartman) Bates.
After graduating from Strasburg High School in 1955, he owned and operated Bates Sohio for 21 years. He also served as a mechanic with Malcuits Speed Shop and Goshen Dairy.
Les enjoyed camping, fishing, and animals. He also was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan and read, especially cowboy books.
Les is survived by his children, Lynn (Jeff) Emick and Tim “Jake” (Crystal) Bates; his grandchildren, Rob, Andy, and Lee Slemmer, Kyle Martin, Jason Bates, and Amanda Byrd; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; and his kitty buddy, Tabby.
In addition to his parents, Les was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Bates; and his sister, Norma Weber.
Rev. Robert Edinger will officiate a service celebrating Les’ life in the Geib Funeral Center on Wednesday, November 1, 2023 beginning at 2 p.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Grandview Union Cemetery in Strasburg.
Memorial contributions in Les’ memory may be directed to the Tuscarawas County Humane Society.
