Mary Alice Reporting –

As the 2023-24 school year gets underway over the next few weeks, schools are still looking for substitute staff.

Over the past few years, the need increased for individuals to fill-in in the classrooms, driving buses, and other positions throughout a school district.

Locally, many districts have expressed the need for substitutes, including Dover City Schools Superintendent Kari McCrate.

“We are always in need of high-quality substitute teachers. We are also in need of substitute bus drivers, custodians, cafeteria assistants, substitute secretaries, so all of those positions are areas that we’re always in need of.”

Requirements to become a sub, is having a bachelor’s degree, complete a background check, and be hired by the school district through their application process; however, some districts may have adopted policies where a four-year degree is not necessary.
