Mary Alice Reporting –

A well-known local figure in the community and political world passed away over the weekend.

Doug Wills began an over 50 year career at the first New Philadelphia Buehler’s location in 1969 and worked his way from cleanup, to meat department, before becoming assistant manager and then store manager for the Dover location, and New Philadelphia, before going back to Dover.

In his political journey, Wills served as Tuscarawas County Party Republican Chairman for 35 years, and was also a member of the Tuscarawas County Board of Elections. He recently began a third-term as 31 District State Central Committeeman, and was most recently, on April 26th, elected as Vice Chairman of the Ohio Republican Party.

New Philadelphia Mayor Joel Day says it’s a huge loss for everyone but particularly Wills wife, Barb, of 43 years.

“The bond there was mutual love and respect. I think a lot of Doug’s achievements are the result of Barb’s support and encouragement. She needs our prayers. This is such a loss for her.”

Day adds that Wills was a mentor with his dedication and endless energy.

“To me, Doug was a leader and a champion. I mean, whatever he did he was all in with a passion, and loved to encourage people and loved to see people succeed.”

Wills was also involved at the Tuscarawas County Fair Board, Performing Arts Center, and Dover Rotary.

Calling hours and funeral arrangements are not yet available.
