Mary Alice Reporting –

A Buckeye Career Center, in New Philadelphia, hosted Ohio’s Lieutenant Governor Wednesday afternoon.

Jon Husted was able to see the number of students, from two different schools, as the attended an 8th grade career carnival before going on a tour of three labs, where he talked with students and instructors.

Following that, he sat down at a round table with multiple different companies who have current employees that graduated from BCC programs.

Overall, Husted noted that it was a great opportunity to tour the center and see all they are achieving.

“What we’re trying to do at the state level is give them more resources so that they can expand. That means more students getting an education moving right from high school into careers, and there are a lot of manufactures who are hiring. They need talent, whether that’s wielding, precision machining, robotics, and the students are preparing to go take those jobs.”

Buckeye Career Center Superintendent Bob Alsept added that it was great to have Husted visit the school, see their growth, and hear how technical centers help individuals find a career path.

“Career tech is very important across the state. With the manufacturing and the jobs that are coming to Ohio , they need skilled workers and we feel like we’ve been doing that for a long time and then to hear from some of our local employers talk about how much of their workforce is made up of Buckeye graduates, it was a great day.”

Topics discussed during the round table included the businesses collaboration to hire graduating students and the need to promote career technical education programs.
