Empower Tusc and the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services (ADAMHS) Board announced the launch of a new public health campaign.

Man Therapy Ohio is a statewide public health campaign aimed at combatting the stigma surrounding mental health. According to the Tuscarawas County Coroner’s report, 10 of 13 suicides in 2023 were male.

Empower Tusc Suicide Prevent Committee Chair, Terri Miller, says Man Therapy Ohio provides a place to learn about men’s mental health.

“It kind of is just a check in with, “How are you mentally?” Do have you diagnosable depression or anxiety, or maybe you are dealing with some substance use issues? So that’s one of the first things you can do and then there’s other humorous videos. That’s the thing about mantherapy.org, they use a lot of humor to really tackle such a serious topic. I think it really hits to that man-to-man type of humor.”

In addition to the campaign, the ADAMHS Board with Coleman Health Services is offering training for suicide prevention according to Manager of Community Services Leslie Korn.

“We know that it is a really touchy subject to enter into and so we want people who are leaving this training feeling confident and competent about how to have those hard discussions and then know where to go.”

For no cost, the public can attend the Tuscarawas County Public Library’s Main Branch training on May 20th from 6 pm to 7:30. A second training will be held at the same time at the Carroll County Police Department on May 30th.
