Mary Elizabeth Hammond, 70, of Dennison, passed away on Monday, October 24, 2022, at Park Village Health Care Center in Dover, following a brief illness. Born June 7, 1952, in Dennison, she was the daughter of Joseph Phillip and Mary Ann (Lasut) Datko who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Lyman Hammond whom she married on June 22, 1974, when he passed on August 16, 2019.

Mary was a lifelong area resident who in her younger years helped her mother at their family’s business, the Edgefield Tavern. After marrying John, she devoted her life to her family for many years as a loving wife, mother, and homemaker, and later worked as a caregiver at the West Home.

A member of the last graduating class of St. Mary’s High School in 1970, Mary was active in Immaculate Conception Parish throughout her life. She loved volunteering with the Altar Society and annual parish festivals, as well as serving as a lector. Mary will also be remembered fondly by her many friends at the Tuscarawas County YMCA where she and her husband had been faithful members of the Silver Sneakers classes. Her warm and welcoming nature made her a natural friend to all who met her, and she will be deeply missed.

John and Mary were blessed with two sons who survive, Garry Hammond and Joey Hammond. Mary is also survived by her sisters- and brothers-in-law, Mary and Chuck Melzer, Bonnie and Pete Maurer, and Thomas Hammond; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend of over 50 years, Theresa Babarcik.

Father Jeff Coning will celebrate the funeral Mass on Friday, October 28, at 10:00 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church in Dennison. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery. A Christian Wake service will be held at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday in the R. K. Lindsey Funeral Home where visitation will be 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., immediately following. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Immaculate Conception Church Altar Society.
