Mary Ripley Haggis, the youngest of six children, was born on July 13, 1934, to the late Sehon Miller and Hazel Hoyle Ripley at Ellsworth, Ohio.  On August 7, 1955, she married William C. Haggis, who served as pastor of Roseville Lutheran Parish, Roseville, Ohio, Grace Lutheran Church, Steubenville, Ohio, and retired from Grace Lutheran Church, Dover, Ohio after 26 years, as interim pastor for Stone Creek Lutheran Parish, Stone Creek, Ohio for 16 years, and then three years as a supply preacher for Trinity Episcopal Church in New Philadelphia.

Mary was a wife, mother, grandmother, helper to those in need, and a friend to many people. Mary was a graduate of Canfield High School in 1952 and Salem City Hospital School of Nursing at Salem, Ohio in 1955.  She worked as a registered nurse at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Good Samaritan Hospital in Zanesville, Ohio Valley Hospital in Steubenville, and retired from the office of Dr. Paul McFadden in Dover.  

While her husband, (Pastor Bill) served at Grace Lutheran, she was active in Sunday Church School and Bible Study serving as a teacher for both, Bell Choir, Mary Baer WELCA, an ordained deacon, Order of St. Luke the Physician, and received the Founder’s Day Award in 1997.  Mary and her husband enjoyed life together, their family, Bible Study, people, traveling, reading, genealogy, exercising, and walking together.  Pastor Bill preceded her in death on May 6, 2022.  

She was a member of several genealogy societies in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New England. Mary was a member of the First Families of Ohio, Society of Civil War Families of Ohio, Settlers and Builders of Ohio, Pioneer Families of Mahoning County, Pioneer Families of Trumbull County, Fort Lauren’s Chapter of DAR, and Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Ohio. Her American lineage dates back to the arrival in the 1620s and 1630s of William Bradford, William Ripley, Thomas Bingham, and Simon Sackett. She published the “Genealogy of Ripley-Hoyle With Extended Lines” in 2009, having started her genealogy quest while in high school.  

She served on the YWCA board in Zanesville; was a Brownies leader, a Cub Scout leader, and was active in several organizations while she resided in Steubenville.  Later in Tuscarawas County, she served on the board of Personal and Family Counseling, was president of the ARTS Council of Tuscarawas County, a member and secretary of the Dover Band Boosters, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Salem Chapter No. #334.  

Surviving are her two children, Rev. William II (Crystal) of Van Wert, Ohio and Cheryl (Mark) Lorson of Hilliard, Ohio.  There are six grandchildren; Jonathan, Stephanie, and Jennifer Haggis, and Mark II, William, and Katherine Lorson.  

She was also preceded in death by her five brothers, Delbert, Donald, Earl, Robert, and Orval.  

Friends are invited to call at the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory of Dover on Wednesday, July 27, 2022, from 4:00 -7:00 pm.  A celebration of Mary’s life will take place at Salem Evans Creek Lutheran Church, 9030 Deibel Road, Stone Creek, Ohio on Thursday, July 28, 2022, at 11:00 am with her son, Pastor Will Haggis, and Pastor Cathy Ammlung officiating. Friends can call one hour prior to the service at the church.  Following the service, a meal will be served in Salem Fellowship Hall at 4681 Stonecreek Road.  A service of committal will take place at Dover Burial Park at 2:00 pm. 

In lieu of flowers, Mary’s request was to help the living and those in need with monetary contributions to her special organizations: the Greater Dover-New Philadelphia Food Pantry, First Baptist Church Scholarship Fund of 140 Regent Street in Dover, or donate a unit of blood at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital which helps others and costs nothing except your time.
