Design work is progressing for a multi-million-dollar improvement project in downtown New Philadelphia.

During his report to council on Monday, Mayor Joel Day gave an update on the plan to use grant money to renovate three quadrants of the square. He says members of the community action organization partnering with the city on the project were in town last week for a walk-through and a progress report.

Also last week, representatives from the design firm met with the city’s downtown design review board to get input from that group. The construction deadline is October of 2026, although the organization expects completion sooner since no special permits are needed.

The city was awarded 2.9-million-dollars for the project that officials say will create additional space on the square for events and outdoor dining.
