New Philadelphia police have been sharing more information into the crash early Saturday morning where the driver fled on foot and left behind a passenger dead at the scene.
Chief Tessa Pohovey says the driver was 37-year-old Janesh Cabrera Vargas of Virgina. The passenger who died was 21-year-old Terron Henderson of New Philadelphia.
It appears Cabrera Vargas was driving a dodge charger with Henderson hanging out a window just prior to crashing into a pole on south Broadway near Hilan Avenue southwest shortly after 2 a.m. She says Vargas was apparently racing while witnesses claim Henderson had been hanging out of car’s window.
Police caught up with Cabrera Vargas a short time later. He was treated for injuries and taken to jail later that morning where he is being held on charges including vehicular homicide and OVI.
Cabrera Vargas is scheduled for a preliminary hearing in New Philadelphia Municipal court Tuesday morning.
