Mary Alice Reporting –

AAA is projecting over 115 million travelers will go 50 miles or more from home over the 10-day holiday period.

This number is about a two percent increase over 2022. With this in mind, AAA East Central is noting the best and worst times to travel.

The worst day will be Saturday, December 23rd, between 11am and 7pm. Sunday and Monday sees minimal traffic impacts.

For December 26th and 27th, the worst times to head out will be between 1pm to 7pm. December 28th and 29th will see more traffic between 2pm and 8pm, and for December 30th, 5pm to 7pm will see impacts.

AAA Public and Legislative Affairs Manager Jim Garrity recommends planning ahead if traveling by vehicle or going to the airport.

“Going to be a very, very busy holiday. Take whatever steps you can to make sure that you’re in the right mindset. One of the biggest things you can do is give yourself plenty of time. Maybe add an hour or two onto your travel time.”

Other tips include checking the forecast for a destination, ensure the vehicle is ready for the road and conduct any maintenance, and if parking at an airport, chose a well-lit garage section, lock doors, and remove any valuables.
