Local health departments are going to take a swipe at the mosquito population on Wednesday.

Mosquito spraying is scheduled for Wednesday night in Fairfield Township, between 8 and 11pm and the city of New Philadelphia beginning around 8:45pm, both weather permitting.

New Philadelphia Health Department Director of Environmental Health Zach Phillips says that department is spraying around the Southside Community Park and Soccer Complex, and at Tuscora Park.

He says the department tries to spray prior to large events like this weekend’s First Town Days. Plus, local traps showed a high count of mosquitoes.

Phillips explains with all the rain in the area, he anticipates the department will be spraying a lot this summer to combat a large number of mosquitoes.

The County Health Department has already sprayed several times this year because of high mosquito counts, including in the city of Dover, Tuscarawas, Mill Township and twice now in Fairfield.

So far, the departments have not reported any instances of West Nile Virus found in the test pools.

The health departments recommend people with breathing issues close their windows when spraying takes place on Wednesday night.
