Nick McWilliams reporting – As weather shifts towards warmer temperatures and better driving conditions, motorcycles will be more common on roadways.

May represents National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, with the reminder to drive cautiously and sober.

Ohio State Highway Patrol New Philadelphia Post Trooper Jen Makris says that the safety aspect involves drivers of both cars and motorcycles.

“Whether you’re driving a motorcycle or motor vehicle, you can make the roads safer by being aware of your surroundings while driving. Look twice, and save a life.”

In 2021, over 4,000 crashes involved motorcycles, claiming 223 lives with nearly 1,200 serious injuries.

All motorcyclists are urged to always wear proper safety equipment, take training courses, and ensure endorsements are up to date. Last year, 54 percent of at-fault motorcyclists in crashes did not have endorsements on their license.

Riders under 18 and drivers with less than one year of experience are required to wear helmets under Ohio law.
