Gwen Rummell Reporting –

The construction of the new Harrison County Jail continues with the first parts of the project well underway.

Construction workers have began installing some of the underground infrastructure for the project before they continue to build the foundation.

The need for a new jail arose after concerns about the cost of continuously transporting inmates. The current jail, built in 1925, can only hold eight inmates, leading to officers being required to transport them to another facility.

Work was initially delayed after the project breaking ground four months ago, but progress has been made since equipment arrival in November.

Pending weather, the jail is expected to be completed in early 2025.
