Discussions are beginning in New Philadelphia about criminalizing certain aspects of homelessness following a U.S. Supreme Court decision.
Law director Marvin Fete shared the news during last Monday’s city council meeting, saying communities can now fine people for sleeping outside at parks and other public places.
“Some folks from Oregon brought this action because what was happening was people were sleeping on the streets and they had no authority to get the off the streets and into shelters. There was no incentive.”
The high court handed down the decision on June 26th. Fete suggested adding language to the city’s park ordinance, which was last updated in 1960.
“Certainly, this will be something we’ll want to consider in terms of protecting our parks and making sure that those who don’t have some place to go are getting the type of treatment help that they need.”
Members requested a memo summarizing the ruling and what it could mean for the city before next Monday’s city council meeting.
