Mary Alice Reporting –

Property owners with vacant buildings must now enroll with the City of New Philadelphia.

A registry has been in the works and officially went online on Monday that requires the annual registration of unoccupied buildings.

Code Administrator Josh Mathias explained to council that this registry is for residential, commercial, or industrial.

“Buildings with multiple units are required to register only if more than half of the available units or more than half of the available space is empty, so if you have an apartment complex with ten apartments and six are full, they’re exempt from it.”

Mathias noted that exterior inspections will also be involved.

“And that’s to ensure adequate property maintenance is being kept up. That’s part of the whole reason for this registry.”

A fee will be charged, which will vary based upon the type of building and the length of its vacancy.

There are some other exemptions which can be found, as well as more details, online at www.newphilaoh.com.
