The New Philadelphia School District has the only two 5-star rated elementary schools in Tuscarawas County. East and West elementary schools earned the perfect ranking on the state’s 5-star scale.
West houses fourth-graders and East houses kindergarten and first-graders. Superintendent Amy Wentworth says she is proud of the hard work of educators and students.
Overall, the New Philadelphia School District scored 3 ½ stars, as did Dover. One thing keeping those districts from scoring higher is their graduation rates, which are slightly below the state graduation rate.
Wentworth says New Philadelphia and Dover have a number of migrant students who enroll at around 16 years old but then drop out to go work when they turn 18.
Meanwhile, Buckeye Career Center earned a 5-star ranking for the second straight year from the Ohio Department of Education. The Career Technical Planning District earned high marks for graduation, career readiness and post-graduation results.
