A groundbreaking ceremony for the 2.9-million-dollar New Philadelphia downtown improvement project is Wednesday, but City Service Director Ron McAbier says don’t expect to see any construction work there until August.
The project will reshape three of the four quadrants at the intersection of High and Broadway. McAbier says an Ohio Appalachian Community Grant will cover the cost. He hopes the work is done by this time next year.
McAbier says the event at 1 p.m. Wednesday on the Gazebo square is less of a groundbreaking and more of a celebration and opportunity to share the latest renderings. That is when state officials are able to attend. However, the actual construction won’t start for another couple of months. McAbier is looking forward to more green space, new surfaces and more space to lounge or watch a concert.
The impact to downtown traffic will be minimal.
