A candidate has been chosen to run in the November general election for Tuscarawas County Common Pleas Judge.

The seat opened with the retirement of Elizabeth Thomakos. For the time being, Ryan Styer will serve as judge, stepping away from his role as County Prosecutor.

The Tuscarawas County Democrat Party selected Christine Weimer to run for judge. She’s the current Magistrate of the New Philadelphia Municipal Court.

“I’ve been in this position since 2012. I hear and adjudicate cases. People present their evidence whether it’s civil cases, criminal cases, traffic cases, we do initial appearances on felonies. That’s my daily life here in Municipal Court.”

If elected, Weimer says she wants to carry on the legacy of Thomakos and her work with COBRA court but also expand.

“I would really like to incorporate a veterans docket because I think our veterans who have served have special needs that are different than typical individuals we serve, and needs that if you have not served or been in combat I don’t’ think anybody can understand that type of trauma so I’d like to really incorporate that into the therapeutic docket judge Thomakos has started.”

Moving forward she will host fundraisers and be at a 7pm March 31st meet the candidate night at Kent State Tuscarawas Founder’s Hall.
