The local Thanksgiving weekend was relatively quiet, and the Ohio State Highway Patrol is hoping the year-end holidays will be the same.
Statewide traffic fatalities were down, at eight, from the year before, with New Philadelphia Post Lt. Johnnie Maier saying they experienced one in their district area.
“We did experience one traffic fatality in Carroll County. That was a single car off the road that struck a tree.”
The number of contacts with the public, explains Maier, was up this year at 184 compared to 86 in 2023.
“And that would just include crashes that we responded to, calls that we responded to, and traffic stops that were made for roadway violations. I think that speaks volumes to what’s working for law enforcement in terms of keeping the motoring public safe and just being out there, being active, and being vigilant.”
Lt. Maier reminds drivers to never get behind the wheel while impaired, to buckle up, and to put away any distractions. With it being the holidays, being patient with the increased traffic can also help prevent crashes.
