The City of New Philadelphia is getting closer to overhauling a portion of the downtown.

Mayor Joel Day told council Monday night that the designs for the state funded $2.9 million project to enhance three of the four quadrants at the intersection of Broadway and High Avenue are 75% done.

“The Columbus firm creating the design should have that phase of the project completed within a month.”

Day says the final design – when finished – will then be made public and the project will be put out to bid.

“Quadrants that are being redesigned are the gazebo, the Gavin’s and the House of Stone quadrants. The project is being funded by the Governor’s Appalachian Community Grant program.”

Service Director Ron McAbier says this won’t end up narrowing the turning radiuses for trucks at the intersection.

“They’re saying basically where they are right now.”

Day adds construction should begin by late July or early August. The goal has been to have it finished by this fall.
