Mary Alice Reporting – Banners will go up in New Philadelphia featuring veterans and currently serving military members.
It’s a new program through the VFW Post 1445 to honor men and women of all branches of the United States Armed Forces.
To start off, says Post Commander Steve Chenevey, they will mount and display the banners on utility poles along North and South Broadway, between Fair Avenue and Front Street.
“The City of New Phila has the brackets and the VFW is going to be paying for the banners. That’s how the program is starting. We’re just doing one street on Broadway at this time and we hope to expand it next year.”
High quality photos can be dropped off and a Hometown Hero Banner application completed at the New Phila VFW.
The banners will be up from Memorial Day through Veterans Day. Chenevey notes that each year the downtown display will rotate but the VFW will have another display at their headquarters at 441 Park Avenue.
“We are going to offer this program year round. We are setting up a place over at the New Philadelphia VFW, kind of a memorial garden section with poles, that we can mount these banners on when they’re not being used for the New Philadelphia Memorial Day to Veterans Day display.”
With limited funds, residents are encouraged to donate for the banner program, for the honor board and relief funds, the veteran’s foodbank, and other charities the New Phila VFW is involved in.
