New Philadelphia is preparing to pay about twice as much for road salt this winter as communities everywhere deal with the rising cost.
Service Director Ron McAbier told New Philadelphia City Council the salt itself was bid at $92 a ton through ODOT, but transportation from the Mansfield area will add another $25 a ton. That brings the city’s cost to about $117 a ton, compared with $62.25 last year. He says the city will pay about $152,000 for 1,300 tons of salt, compared with roughly $75,000 for 1,200 tons last year.
The city originally planned to purchase 1,600 tons, but McAbier says it reduced that amount by 300 because of the higher price.
He also says the salt won’t be available for pickup until January 15th, raising concerns about how much of the winter the city will have to get through before receiving the bulk of its supply.
