Nick McWilliams reporting – New Philadelphia residents are invited to the courthouse stairs in the Square on Monday at 11 a.m.

In recognition of the Memorial Day holiday, the New Phila Veterans’ Coordinating Committee will host the remembrance gathering. The committee is comprised of the American Legion Post 139, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1445, and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 857.

The guest speaker for 2023 will be VFW Post 1445 Chaplain Jerry Chenevey.

The New Philadelphia High School Marching Quakers will be on hand to perform the National Anthem, and the high school’s Delphian Chorale and Central Elementary fifth-grade choir will perform various patriotic songs.

Other presentations, including the Gettysburg Address and the folding of Old Glory, will also take place, followed by Taps and three rifle volleys.

In the event of inclement weather, the presentation will be held at the banquet hall of the VFW at 441 Park Avenue.

The Memorial Day holiday was first recognized after the American Civil War in 1868 as Decoration Day, before being formally adopted as Memorial Day in 1971 to be observed on the last Monday of May.

The day serves to honor the lives of the more than one million service men and women who lost their lives due to wars.
