New Philadelphia City officials are showing off what $2.9 million in improvements to three of the four downtown quadrants will look like in just over a year.
Officials unveiled the final project rendering during a ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday.
The event plaza, northwest quadrant, will feature a new covered stage, planting area, picnic tables, and special lighting. The southeast ‘grove’ quadrant will include a planting area and site furnishings, and the southwest ‘backyard’ quadrant will have a grassy event lawn.
Mayor Joel Day says this work has been anticipated for about two years now.
“Our project will transform downtown New Philadelphia into a more welcome gathering place that will encourage more community activities, building improvements, and business growth.”
The money for this came from Governor Mike DeWine’s Appalachian Community Grant Program, which was created using $500 million in American Recue Plan Act funds for transformative projects in east and southeast Ohio.
The latest timeline has construction starting next month with a grand opening slated for September 2026.
