An annual program will be held at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse, weather permitting, to honor all who served in the United States Armed Forces.
New Philadelphia VFW Post 1445 Commander Steve Chenevey says Veterans Day recognizes all who have served.
“Whether they’re active duty. Whether they’re retired. Whether they served two to four years and they’re done, they’ll all veterans and they need to be honored for their service, and respected for their service.”
The 2025 program guest speaker is Jason Thornton, an Iraq War veteran of the US Marine Corp, retiring after 20 years of service as a Chief Warrant Officer 3. Thornton continues to serve with the Tuscarawas County Veterans Service Office and founded the Combat Warrior Outdoor charity to help veterans deal with their physical and mental wellbeing with outdoor wilderness activities.
Post Chaplain Jerry Chenevey says Tuesday’s program will also include the New Philadelphia High School marching band and performances by other student musicians and vocalists.
“That’s one of the things that makes it so special for me at least. I think for a lot of people to see our young people involved celebrating our veterans, so we’re really looking forward to seeing them again. Some of our elementary school children are going to be there again this year to make some music for us and a group of young Welty students will be there to demonstrate the proper folding of the American flag.”
The event starts at 11am and will also include the traditional rendering of volleys and taps. Afterward, the community is invited to the Post Canteen for a ham and bean soup luncheon.
