The Tuscarawas Valley District and the Booster Club will continue to raise funds for the installation of turf fields for the Tusky Valley Trojans athletic facilities.
Steve Franks explains they currently have natural grass fields. The goal is to create practice and competition fields that can be utilized rain or shine.
“Takes the burden off the daily maintenance of a natural grass field as far as paint, the mowing, the fertilizing, all those things. It will allow you to host tournaments if available.”
On Monday, the Board of Education approved to move forward to turf the stadium field, baseball field, and the softball infield.
Prior to the vote, Board Member Sally Green’s opposition surrounded the hefty $2 million price tag.
“I support the sports whole heartedly, but I think at this time it would be unwise to spend this amount of money even though we know by the pricing it continues to go up. At this time, I feel like I cannot spend this much money on this issue.”
Adam Fisher supported the project.
“I feel that our sports teams, the athletics, the band, anybody who uses the fields deserve the same amount of goodness as the rest of the buildings around here. We do, as a school district, are fiscally conservative and we do have a carryover so now, in my opinion, is the time that we spend the money.”
Amy Burrier emphasized the need for continued community support to help off-set the price.
“I also agree that we need to do our athletic fields and possibly go this route because it’s not going to get any cheaper. With that said I am publicly going to tell our community we need to all come together to help with this project because we will be looking for continued support.”
Donations can be made payable to Tuscarawas Valley Local Schools attention Turf Project. Updates can be found at www.tvtrojanboosters.org.
The district says work should start in June.
