Newcomerstown firefighters were dispatched Friday morning for a confirmed structure fire in the 700 block of S. River Street.

Assistant Fire Chief Ricky Patterson says the call was at 3:50am and according to the single occupant, he had been working in the detached garage and a running propane heater caught on fire.

“Was a detached garage behind the residence. The building has been deemed a total loss. We were able to bring the fire under control within approximately an hour. We remained on scene until about 7am.”

Based upon the occupants’ statement, he was working in the garage and a working propane heater caught on fire.

“He made it out of the building but returned back to attempt to put on the fire. He sustained 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his arms, hands, and face. He was transported by Tri-County EMS to Genesis Coshocton. That was the only injury noted during the incident.”

That was the only injury. Patterson says the Ohio State Fire Marshall will assist in the investigation.

Newcomerstown was assisted by Delaware Valley and West Lafayette Fire Departments.
