Mary Alice Reporting –

~ The Tuscarawas County Public Library continued efforts to provide books for babies through its First Steps to Literacy: Books for Babies Trust fund that was established in 2008.

Last year, the library was able to offer 50 books to babies born at Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital, with 25 of those books being bilingual.

The trust was established, by Betty Lou Honaker, with the hope to sustain this project for many years. Each year, 90 percent of the interest income is used to purchase books for newborns while the remaining interest income and trust fund is reinvested for use in future years.

~ Special Olympics Ohio (SOOH) and the Ohio Alliance of YMCA’s have partnered to provide registered athletes and approved providers with memberships, as long as they meet certain criteria.

The goal is to allow athletes the benefits of exercise and the ability to train year-round.

To be eligible, each SOOH athlete will be contacted by their community-based organization and instructed to fill out a request form. Once the athlete has a current physical on file and is in good standing, they will receive a confirmation letter, either digitally or on letterhead.
