Mary Alice Reporting –

A Tuesday fire that had multiple responding units was in a storage building and a second alarm was called due to the building size.

At around 5:30pm, Central Dispatched advised Sugarcreek Fire and Rescue of the blaze at Belden Brick Central Maintenance, and once on scene, heavy smoke was showing from a large commercial building.

According to Chief John Meek, workers advised that the fire was in a storage room off of the garage of the maintenance building. An initial attack was made by Sugarcreek Ladder 1009 and they were able to contain the blaze.

“They store all of their truck parts, mechanical items like filters, tires, and stuff. Talked to some of the employees and they tried to put the fire out with a couple of extinguishers but were unsuccessful. Most of the smoke and the fire was contained in the storage room in the back of the maintenance plant.”

Units remained on scene for over two hours for overhaul and investigation. No one was injured but multiple ambulances were requested for firefighter rehab.

“Has to rotate the guys just because of the heat on the outside but also in this room there was no windows, no ventilation, so it was very hot, very thick smoke in the room, and it took a while to make sure all the fire was out because we had to use fans to push a lot of smoke out of the room.”

Items were damaged along with the roof of the structure, but the main portion was not damaged. A cause is attributed to a ceiling light.

Assisting departments included Baltic, Dover, Dundee Wayne Township Fire, East Holmes, Stonecreek, and York Township, which totaled to 19 apparatus and 52 personnel.
