Mary Alice Reporting-

A Dover home is a loss following a Saturday morning blaze.

Firefighters were toned out at around 4:30am and responded to 1409 E. 2nd Street.

Captain Brooks Ross explains the structure was a ranch house with a walkout basement. The house was completely involved with the roof half collapsed.

He notes that neighbors were unsure if the older homeowner was inside.

“The initial thing our crews did was try to put a little bit of a hit on the fire with a large hose line. Other members of the crew threw some ladders up to the bedroom windows and what we call vent, enter, search. They break those windows, search real quick, and come back out. They were unable to locate anybody.”

Following that search, the roof completely collapsed. Once the blaze was knocked down enough, crews reentered and found no one. It was later known that the man had left earlier that day.

Ross adds that, at this point, a cause is unknown.

“We have a fairly good idea of somewhere in what would have been the living room [and] kitchen area, it was kind of an open area, but we called in the State Fire Marshal’s Office to assist with our investigators.”

The first alarm call had responding units also from New Philadelphia, Strasburg, Bolivar, and Smith Ambulance.
