A group of concerned citizens wants Dover officials to take a stand against federal immigration enforcement efforts.

They were at the most recent City Council meeting, with Grayson Bowers speaking for the group.

“We need a plan for our hospitals, our churches, and our schools for helping stand up to protect the vulnerable and marginalized among us. We need clearly defined and transparency policy stated publicly for all of our city’s institutions.”

Dover Mayor Shane Gunnoe says he does not anticipate any change in the city’s approach to immigration issues.

Meanwhile, Dover Schools Superintendent Karie McCrate says the district has had a policy regarding ICE and other law enforcement agencies.

“If ICE were to visit the school, we would follow those policies and follow the legal requirements to ensure that we are in compliance with the law and we’re working to support our students.”

She says by law they cannot inquire about or share records about students’ immigration status.

Officials say ICE does not coordinate with local law enforcement and are not required to alert local authorities before conducting raids. They say local safety forces are not responsible for enforcing immigration law.
