Norma Jean Phillips, age 96, a lifelong resident of Uhrichsville, Ohio, passed away surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Park Village Southside in New Philadelphia, Ohio, after a period of declining health.
Norma was born on May 12, 1930, in Uhrichsville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Roy E. and Lena Dale (Morrow) Fouts. In 1948, Norma graduated from Uhrichsville High School. On August 17, 1952, Norma married Alfred “Fred” Phillips. Together the spent 36 years of marriage until his passing on December 22, 1988.
For 42 years, Norma was employed at H & L Green 5 and 10, where she started working when she was in high school. Norma loved her church, Newport Methodist Church and she enjoyed cooking meals for all of the church functions. She was always there to take care of family members and neighbors. Cooking for everyone and quilting was her pastime but working in the greenhouse was her quiet time.
Norma is survived by her two children Donna Jean (Blaine) Steele of Uhrichsville and James (Teresa) Phillips of Newport; her only surviving sibling Ronnie Fouts of Newport; brother-law Roy (Janice) Phillips of Heath; grandchildren Shannon (Jeff) Sanders of Dover, Amanda Roth of Stillwater, Keith (Jessica) Steele of New Philadelphia and Andrew (Gabby) Phillips of Tuscarawas; nine grandchildren Ethan and Noah, Bayleigh, Owen and Kya, Greyson and Aria and Charleigh; along with special nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Norma is preceded in death by her siblings Floyd Fouts, Shirley White, Sylvia Fouts, Jane Dinger and a grandson Connor Seevers.
Funeral services for Norma will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 1 p.m., at the Uhrich-Hostettler English Funeral Home, Inc. in Uhrichsville, with the Pastor Kory Rowland officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in New Philadelphia.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 p.m., on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the funeral home and one hour prior to services on Tuesday.
