Slow down and move over. It just might save someone’s life.

That was the message the Ohio Department of Transportation and other agencies were sharing during national move over day this past Saturday.

However, District 11 Public Information Officer Lauren Borell says educating drivers on the law requiring them to move over for vehicles with flashing lights is a focus year-round.

“They all have family and loved ones to go home to at the end of the day, and it’s important for us as drivers to make sure that we’re driving safe to make sure that happens.”

So far this year, there have been 66 crashes statewide involving ODOT workers, vehicles, and equipment.

First-time violators of Ohio’s move over law can be ordered to pay up to 300-dollars, twice the fine for speeding, with escalating penalties for subsequent offenses.
