With millions projected to travel over the extended holiday weekend, the Ohio Department of Transportation is working to limit work zones.
Nearly 71 million, according to AAA data, are expected to travel 50 miles or more between Thursday and Sunday, with busy times on the 4th between 2 and 7pm, on Sunday the 7th during that same timeframe, and then on Monday between 1 and 5pm.
Summer is orange barrel season and ODOT District 11 Public Information Officer Lauren Borell says, where they can, work zones will be reduced.
“And open as many lanes as possible through the Fourth of July celebration, of course that includes the Fourth of July, the day before, and then the following days through the weekend. Of course, current road closures will remain closed; however, where we can open up those lanes, for example on I-77 where we’re resurfacing down toward Newcomerstown we will open as many lanes as possible to help with the flow of traffic.”
She encourages all travelers to plan ahead by checking www.ohgo.com or download the app for statewide construction areas, dangerous slowdowns, and other incidents.
Additionally, AAA East Central recommends those going on a road trip to ensure car seats are installed correctly, be prepared for the unexpected, and make sure the vehicle is road ready.
