Anyone getting a text message claiming to be from the Department of Motor Vehicles is asked to never click links or provide personal information.
Texts are being sent demanding payment for parking tickets, and Ohio Registrar Charlie Norman says this is a scam.
“Every state is seeing the same exact text. Do not click that link and delete the text as soon as you get it.”
Another scam that was seen last month was a claim that a person’s license would be suspended due to unpaid tolls.
Norman says there are some red flags folks can look out for.
“There’s a threatening tone, there’s a sense of urgency to take action, there are often spelling errors, and the link often is not the domain website of the entity they proport to be.”
Norman adds that the Ohio DMV does send out some text messages, but individuals have to sign-up to receive them, like a reminder to renew a vehicles registration or drivers licenses.
“We would never send out an unsolicited text and we would never send out a text demanding payment or personal information.”
Ohioans can report scam attempts to the Federal Trade Commission at www.reportfraud.ftc.gov.
