Mary Alice Reporting –

Ohio’s annual back-to-school sales tax holiday will be longer this year.

Eligible items apply to this tax exemption that will run from Tuesday, July 30th through Thursday August 8th, making it over one week instead of the previous three days.

Tuscarawas County Auditor Larry Lindberg notes that this holiday was created to give parents a break on school supplies.

While this is a needed break from families, he notes that the county and state take a loss since they are not receiving the statewide rate of 5.75% for the garments and supplies.

“It’s a little bit of a burden on the businesses with all the reprogramming of the cash registers that needs to be done to accommodate, but again it does benefit the public.”

Shoppers looking to take advantage of Ohio’s holiday is asked to consider any restrictions for return policies and are advised to keep item purchase receipts. Additionally, those shopping online should use caution for any potential scams
