State lawmakers are taking up the Governor’s request from his recent State of the State Address to ban cellphones in the classroom.

State Senator Jane Timken introduced the legislation and Governor Mike DeWine says access to cell phones hurts student learning and performance and can be harmful to students’ mental and emotional health.

“Exposes our kids to thinks like cyber bullying, sextortion which means students are blackmailed with private, sensitive images, videos, or information. Both of these factors increase the risk of suicide among our children.”

DeWine says after last year asking school districts to develop their own students cell phone policies, there had been promising feedback.

State senators say they intend to act on the bill quickly.
