Don’t drive impaired, that’s the message the Ohio State Highway Patrol is sharing ahead of two major holidays.

The end of the year sees Christmas and New Year celebrations with New Philadelphia Post Lt. Johnnie Maier says getting behind the wheel impaired or buzzed, whether with drugs or alcohol, should never be an option.

“We’re not going to tolerate impaired driving and we will be out there on those holidays and we will take the necessary action is we are encountered with impaired drivers.”

In Tuscarawas County, from December 2023 through December 15, 2024, troopers have made 178 OVI arrests.

“Impaired driving continues to be at the forefront at what we’re doing and our mission to remove those unsafe drivers from the roadway. We continue to make this a priority and will continue to make this a priority.”

Statewide data shows, since 2019, there have been 72,130 impaired driving-related crashes, resulting in the deaths of 3,920 people. This accounts for 54% of all fatal crashes on Ohio roadways.
