The popular deer gun season returns to Ohio, and the Department of Natural Resource Wildlife Division offers a few reminders.

Back on November 22nd and 23rd, youth white-tailed gun season was held and those participants checked over 9,000. Coshocton county was the top county followed by Knox and then Tuscarawas.

Regular gun season begins on Monday, December 1st and runs through Saturday, December 7th. Education Coordinator Jamey Emmert reminds hunters that regardless of what species they are pursuing to wear blaze orange and practice safety.

“Hunters are required to wear blaze orange when pursuing a deer during gun season. You can pursue other game during gun week as well. Keep in mind that no matter what species you’re pursuing as a hunter you still have to wear blaze orange. Overall, hunting is a very safe pursuit and that’s because hunters bear in mind pointing muzzles in safe directions, always knowing our targets and knowing what’s beyond those targets, and when crossing a fencing we should always do so with an unloaded firearm. All those steps will go a long way.”

One thing hunters need to remember is to gain landowner permission.

“If you have neighboring property and there’s a possibility your deer will fall on that property it’s always helpful to gain permission ahead of time, so you don’t have to deal with it, but if the deer does run onto property, you’re going to have to track down the landowner in order to get permission.”

An added gun weekend will be held December 20th and 21st.
