State troopers are doing what they can to make the so-called “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” on the roads safer by raising awareness and strategizing patrols.

New Philadelphia Post Commander Lt. Johnnie Maier says this is the time period between Memorial Day and Labor Day where traffic picks up, including more lesser-experienced teen drivers, motorcycles, and pedestrians.

Part of what the patrol does is step up its presence where crashes and violations are more likely to occur. Maier says they look out for speeders, people not wearing seatbelts, distracted driving, and impairment.

There were more than 65,000 crashes in Ohio during last year’s “Deadliest Days”, including 364 fatal crashes with 393 deaths.
