Mary Alice Reporting –
Buckeye Career Center collaborated with a neighboring center to allow adult class options.
Coshocton County Career Center is the smallest in Ohio, currently offering 13 programs but none are listed as adult education.
Superintendent Matt Colvin says his vision was to bring back classes; however, they don’t qualify to have an adult diploma program, which is what lead to conversations with Buckeye Career Center.
“Figuring out, okay, what type of programs are available and that’s when we landed on the metal fabrication and the introduction to sales and marketing.”
Colvin notes that partnering to add programs is essential since over 14% of the county, aged 18 and older, do not have a high school diploma or equivalency.
BCC Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Adult Education Frank Polen explains that Buckeye will hire the instructors to teach the courses at the Coshocton Center.
“We will pay for any supplies we’re using just like we would any course here. We’ll take care of the cost of the instructor, the supplies being used, and be able to use their facility.”
The new adult classes will begin January 16th and both programs are part of Ohio Adult Diploma Program (ADP), which allows Ohioans ages 18 and older to enroll for free and earn a high school diploma and industry-recognized credentials.
Informational sessions, at the Coshocton Career Center, will be held January 9th, 10th, and 11th from 4 to 4:30pm, with enrollment opportunities available until 6:30pm. Those applying should bring a valid Ohio driver’s license and have access to an email account.
