Mary Alice Reporting –

On this Monday, paving in the City of New Philadelphia started with crews beginning on 2nd Street.

The city noted that to kick-off the street improvements, it will be from Commercial Avenue SE to Colonial Avenue. Crews will move to Grant Street NW, from Tuscarawas Avenue to 11th Street and onto Kelly St., from Ray Avenue to the dead end.

The budget is $665,000, but with an E. High Avenue section, paving cost is almost $1 million, explains Service Director Ron McAbier.

“Paving was a, believe or not, a pleasant surprise. It only went up about $5 a ton but still dealing with the tonnage that we have it does cut into the budget.”

The concentration will be on side roads and the downtown area. He adds that there will be a more impactful project on 3rd Street NW.

“We did like a phase one of it last year and so now you’ll be able to get from St. Clair all the way out to 4th Street, so all the way to Wabash Avenue so that’ll be a big stretch that’s done.”

All work is weather dependent, and motorists are asked to use caution in work zones.

Other areas to be addressed include sections of Ashwood Lane, Grandview Ave., Kaderly Street, and Grant Ave.
