Mary Alice Reporting –
The Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s Office is reporting an incident involving a pedestrian being hit by a pick-up truck and the driver fleeing the scene.
On Friday, at about 3:50pm, a caller told dispatch that a man was down on Geottge Avenue NE, in New Philadelphia. Witness statements and video recordings showed a green pick-up truck striking the man and then leaving the area. This incident was near the parking lot of the old Hometown 1 Mobile Home Sales location, with video showing the truck continuing toward East High.
The 42-year-old victim was riding a bicycle, and from a Sheriff’s Office release, he suffered from a head injury and broken bones. He was flown to Summa Akron City hospital in critical condition.
The at-fault driver, thanks to a witness identifying him, was located at his residence and when interviewed by Detective Captain Adam Fisher, confessed to intentionally striking the man, giving an indication that there was a history of alleged threats and potential theft issues.
The 23-year-old, from New Philadelphia, was arrested and remains in jail. His name is being withheld pending formal charges.
Sheriff Detectives also impounded his truck, which he stashed at a relative’s home in Uhrichsville.
