Captain Tessa Pohovey gave her oath of office on Wednesday to become the first female Chief of Police for the City of New Philadelphia.
Pohovey was the top scorer out of the four officers who took the Chief’s promotional exam. Her promotion will take the place of retiring Chief Michael Goodwin. She started her career off as a correctional officer at the Stark County Sherriff’s Office. She quickly moved through the ranks, showing clear dedication to her work.
Pohovey says she will “move forward in the department and see what we can be in the next ten years.” She encourages young girls who have interest in the criminal justice field to not fear being in a male-dominated field.
“You can do it and it’s a great career. Females are underrepresented in law enforcement. I think there’s some hesitation as to what you might experience if you become involved in law enforcement, whether that’s police or any other aspect of the criminal justice [system].”
Pohovey’s official start date will be July 7th. Three other officers were also celebrated as they were promoted to higher ranks. Officer Dave Morris was promoted to the rank of Captain, Officer Wayne Clark was promoted to Sergeant, and K-9 Pablo was sworn in, making him the department’s second K-9.
